Kate’s Book of Ordinary, Strange and Beautiful Things
An illustrated journal exploring the ways I find connection, community, belonging, possibility and inner peace as part of everyday life.

Description of the Work
This book is a visual diary, a conversation about my own life experiences, my shadows and my light.
The first story entry documents a single beautiful day. Each new story will capture a different day — a series of snapshots that capture me, my life, my place, my friends and the little things that, together, bring me back to peace and joy. Each drawn step in the journey is accompanied by written descriptions of the way ritual, action, connection and belonging shift the ways we feel.
The Story Behind It
While I was studying, I found myself stuck working on my large visual narrative project ‘Throwback’. My professors suggested I give myself some breathing space and just play. One of the best ways to keep being creative is to create without pressure. Building on my earlier comic experiment, A Modern Full Moon Tale, I decided to use comic drawing to journal my journey from stuck back to joy and clarity. I discovered that it is the strange and beautiful ordinary things that help us find our way.
Medium / Materials
The comic images were roughly drawn in pencil, painted with gouache, then stuck into a journal. I want to play with the formatting a little more with this work. It will be fun digitizing my imperfect quirky handcrafted pieces to create a publishable journal.
Year Created
This work was completed in 2025. I say completed — I have another journal entry underway and hope to expand this book to include more ordinary, strange and beautiful experiences.
