Medium & Materials
The art metaphors for this story are handcrafted in acrylic inks on water color paper. A number of paper engineered art pieces are included within the story and invite interaction, including a spinning wheel to determine which of Anne’s six ancestral gifts to engage with next.
Year
This story is still in progress. It started life as a Master of Fine Arts project in 2025. The emergent and partially completed concept was submitted in 2026. The project was awarded an A+. The goal is to complete this six chapter illustrated story over the next couple of years, then publish and exhibit the work.
Story & Process
Anne’s character and whimsical world is represented by walking the labyrinth, a place we share with our ancestors as we meet ourselves over and over again across our lifetime. To discover who Anne is, we must discover the gifts she is born with, what they pass on to her, the questions she wants answers to, what she remembers, and what she discovers about who she is and why she is here.
The creative process
This story emerged over my postgraduate study from an unrealized desire to connect with my own life journey and a fascination with the ancestors who had come before me. The story evolved from recollections of my earliest dreams and memories as a very young child. The struggle to develop this story was very real. The breakthrough came by applying “the wheelhouse’ process and colliding my story concept with rules and parameters that operated as metaphors for existence across time and space. This included playing with non-linear time, ‘deep time diligence’ and ways to represent repeating patterns of life. From this work the labyrinth and egg theory became vehicles for storytelling. I even wrote a visual diary of the struggle, which I have turned into its own story.
I progressed the work in Miro once I landed on my story concept, created a strong character and character arc, clarified the plot, and clarified my world-making aesthetic. I used Miro to brainstorm concepts, organize ideas into story beats, gather research about people, times, and places, and play with illustrative metaphors that aligned with story beats.
